This fishery is the most consistent. Halibut and Chinook are what most people fish for. All summer long if the sea conditions co-operate the fishing guide fleet heads between 5-20 miles offshore to troll for salmon, and drift for halibut. Starting in May, huge schools of halibut move in from deep water to lie on the outer banks. There are a variety of ways to catch these monsters. Vertical jigging or spread-bar fishing are the two most productive. In some areas offshore the halibut fishing action can be frenzied. The average size is 20-25 pounds, although halibut over 100 pounds are not uncommon. As well, several schools of migrating Chinook and Coho stop along the outer banks to feed on the numerous food sources. The salmon are targeted by deep water trolling with power downriggers. Release clips on the downrigger line allows the fish to be played without bulky extra weight on the line. Early season Chinook (feeders) are the best ones to eat fresh or frozen, and they average about 15 pounds. Later on in the season the trophy size Chinook show up and they average in the mid 20 pound range with several over 30 being caught annually. Top water Coho fishing is phenomenal. Limits of hatchery Coho are landed fast on lightweight rods. This is a great action packed, all in one offshore fishery that provides lots of fish to take home.
